PEL 107 – South Australian Cooper Basin

Drillsearch 40%

PEL 107 is located in the South Australian Cooper Basin and covers the southern tip of the Patchawarra Trough, the Lake Hope high and the southwestern edge of the Gidgealpa-Merrimelia-Innamincka (GMI) trend. Excised areas from within the PEL 107 boundaries include the pre-existing Tantanna, Taloola, Sturt, Malgoona, Spencer and Muteroo oilfields. PEL107 was originally granted on 2 April 2003 for an initial term of five years with an option to renew. As a result of a six month suspension and extension of the permit term in 2006, the permit term expired on 1 December 2008. The new permit term started on 2 December 2008. It expires on 1 December 2013. The renewed area of PEL 107 is 407 sq km which is 50% of the original permit area of 814 sq km due to compulsory relinquishment.

Exploration, to date, in PEL107 has been disappointing with only one discovery (Kiana-1) from the 9 wells drilled within the block during the current permit term. Below is a table of the wells drilled in chronological order.

A number of different exploration plays were tested with this drilling and the exploration focus has evolved with the information gained. One of the lessons learned was the need for 3D seismic data to adequately map the structures that are being targeted. Accordingly, the Joint Venture acquired the 165 square kilometre SKM 3D Seismic Survey during 2007 to better define exploration targets and to delineate the bounds of the only discovery, the Kiana Oilfield. Learning from the success at Kiana, the Joint Venture is now actively exploring for other accumulations stratigraphically trapped oil within Permian reservoirs around the flanks of the Spencer-Muteroo high within the SKM 3D area.
