Essar chiefs called back to court in phone ‘scam’ case
A no-show from key Essar group executives and others accused of involvement in an alleged telecoms licensing scam in India has led to a fresh summons to court.
Essar vice chairman Ravi Ruia and Anshuman Ruia, his nephew and group director, failed to turn up at a court hearing in India on Friday leading to them being ordered back in a month’s time.
Two founders of the Loop telecoms group, Ishwari Prasad Khaitan and Kiran Khaitan, also failed to show in court on Friday resulting in another summons.
Lawyers argued that the accused did not appear as they had not received the original summons. They all live outside India in Dubai.
The CIB filed charges against five individuals and three companies in December in what was its third round of charges in relation to the so-called 2G scam. Allegations of conspiracy and corruption have been leveled against the accused.
Essar has denied all charges laid against it over the alleged scam.
